Manufacturer, distributor, supplier or manufacturer rep?

Manufacturer

Designs and produces equipment

Product engineering, manufacturing, testing, factory support and warranty administration.

Makes the product; may sell through its own team, distributors or independent reps.

Distributor

Supplies equipment and products

Purchasing, inventory, quotations, order fulfillment, branch operations and contractor account support.

Typically purchases and resells products; availability and commercial product lines vary by branch.

Wholesale supplier

Stocks and sells products through branch counters

Counter and inside sales, will-call, credit, purchasing, inventory, delivery and contractor account support across pipe, valves, fittings, plumbing and HVAC supplies.

Buys and stocks products for contractor pickup and jobsite delivery; the branch counter is the primary touchpoint rather than project engineering support.

Manufacturer rep

Represents selected product lines

Specification support, equipment selection, sales engineering, quotations, submittals and project coordination.

Represents manufacturers within defined lines and territories; some also stock or distribute products.

Business types describe functions, not exclusive labels. A stocking rep may also be a distributor; a manufacturer may operate its own sales channel. Wholesale suppliers are distributors in function, so some companies fit both; this directory separates supply-house counters from applied-equipment distributors by how contractors buy from them. Companies appear in every category supported by their official sources.

Commercial and industrial equipment: VRF systems circulate refrigerant to multiple indoor units for zoned heating and cooling; chillers supply chilled water or another cooling fluid to airside or process systems. Boilers include commercial fire-tube and water-tube steam and hot-water units for heating and process loads. Applied HVAC also includes cooling towers and engineered air-handling systems; refrigeration includes compressors, condensing units and cold-storage equipment. Plumbing and piping include water heating, drainage, pipe, fittings and valves. Product lines vary by company.

What distributors do

Some stock equipment and replacement parts; others coordinate project orders, specialty products or packaged systems. Commercial distribution can include HVAC, controls, plumbing, hydronics, pumps and piping products. A stocking representative can also be a distributor, so business types overlap.

Outside and technical sales

Develop contractor accounts, support equipment selections and coordinate with manufacturers and project teams.

Manage inventory, purchasing, fulfillment, customer service and branch performance.

Career progression

Example paths, not company-specific policies or guaranteed promotions.

Sales path

  1. Inside sales
  2. Outside or technical sales
  3. Sales management

Product fluency, accurate quotations and reliable contractor support matter as responsibilities expand.

Operations path

  1. Warehouse or order operations
  2. Inventory or operations lead
  3. Branch management

Build purchasing, logistics, inventory and team-management skills. This is an example path, not a required ladder.

Specialist path

  2. Applications specialist
  3. Product or category management

Develop expertise in a product family, equipment selection and supplier coordination.

Defining a hire

Clarify whether the role is counter sales, commercial quotations, technical account management or branch operations. Specify the product categories and customer mix; residential distribution experience alone does not establish commercial equipment expertise.
