Water-source heat pump (WSHP) systems

Zone heat pumps reject heat to, or draw heat from, a shared water loop. Units in cooling add heat to the loop that units in heating can use.

Equipment scope

A typical boiler/tower loop holds water in a moderate band, adding heat with a boiler and rejecting heat with a closed-circuit cooler or a tower and heat exchanger. Ground-source (geothermal) loops exchange heat with the earth instead. Units are console, horizontal ceiling or vertical closet configurations, usually with a separate ventilation system. Loop flow, water treatment, unit isolation valves and access for filter and coil service drive long-term performance.

Manufacturers design, build and test equipment. Distributors supply equipment, quotations, parts and order support. Manufacturer reps support selections, specifications and represented product lines; some also distribute. Categories overlap only where supported by official sources.

Water-source heat pumps career paths

Example paths, not guaranteed promotions or current openings.

Hydronic and unit installation

Set units, connect hose kits and loop piping, install isolation and flow-control valves, and coordinate condensate and ductwork.

Apprentice → journeyman pipefitter → foreman → superintendent

Major construction roles

Service and maintenance

Diagnose refrigerant circuits, reversing valves, controls and loop flow problems; maintain filters, coils and condensate. EPA 608 certification is required for refrigerant work.

Service technician → senior technician → service manager

Service division roles

Loop and plant design

Size loop pumps, heat rejection and supplemental heat, or geothermal bore fields, based on simultaneous loads.

Designer → mechanical engineer → project engineer or principal
