Outdoor units vary compressor speed and refrigerant flow to many indoor units over one refrigerant network. Heat-recovery systems can move heat from zones in cooling to zones in heating.
Equipment scope
Heat-pump VRF serves all connected zones in one mode at a time; heat-recovery VRF uses branch or mode-change devices so zones can heat and cool simultaneously. Indoor units can be ducted, ceiling cassette, wall-mounted or floor units. Ventilation is normally separate, often a DOAS. Design limits include connected-capacity ratio, piping length and elevation, refrigerant charge relative to occupied room volume under the adopted code, and low-ambient heating capacity. Each manufacturer's system is proprietary, so controls, branch devices and piping rules do not transfer between brands.

Manufacturers design, build and test equipment. Distributors supply equipment, quotations, parts and order support. Manufacturer reps support selections, specifications and represented product lines; some also distribute. Categories overlap only where supported by official sources.
Commercial and industrial HVAC equipment including chillers, air handlers, rooftop systems and VRV (variable refrigerant volume, a VRF technology) solutions. Product brands and sales channels vary.
Commercial HVAC equipment distributor with sales and application engineering support. Products include air distribution and cleaning, fans, filtration, dampers, louvers, chilled beams, heating systems, laboratory controls, VFDs, VRV systems, chillers, cooling towers, air handlers, energy recovery, DOAS and rooftop units. Hydronic offerings include boilers, pumps, heat pumps and plant specialties; the product overview does not identify specific brands.
Distributor of Carrier equipment. Commercial offerings include applied equipment, ductless and conventional split systems, rooftop and indoor package units, VRF, commercial controls and indoor air quality products.

VRF career paths
Example paths, not guaranteed promotions or current openings.
Installation and refrigerant piping
Install outdoor and indoor units, braze and pressure-test refrigerant piping, evacuate and charge to the manufacturer's procedures. EPA 608 certification is required to handle refrigerant; manufacturer installation training is often required for warranty.
Apprentice → journeyman HVAC/pipefitter → VRF lead installer → foreman
Run manufacturer startup and test-run procedures, address units and controls, and diagnose using service tools and error codes. Brand-specific factory training is common.
Service technician → VRF specialist → service manager
Produce manufacturer selection-software layouts and piping diagrams, check refrigerant concentration limits and coordinate submittals. Licensed system design remains the engineer of record's responsibility.
