An indoor air handler, fan coil or ductless head connects to an outdoor condensing unit or heat pump through refrigerant piping.
Cooling-only splits pair with a separate heat source such as a furnace, electric heat or hydronic coil; heat-pump splits provide both. Ductless mini-splits serve individual rooms such as IT and electrical rooms, while ducted splits serve larger zones. Matched indoor and outdoor components, line-set length and lift, and low-ambient operation affect rated capacity and efficiency.
