What SMART members and people thinking about the trade ask most, answered plainly. Dues rates, wage rates and fund contributions are set by each local and change every agreement cycle, so we explain how each one works and point you to the hall for the current figure rather than publishing a number that goes stale.
Gulfstream is a recruiting firm, not a hiring hall. We recruit alongside 92 SMART locals — we do not dispatch, set rates or speak for the union.
What members pay, how it is collected and who sets the amount
Each SMART local sets its own dues under its bylaws. Expect a regular membership due plus working dues taken as a percentage of the hours you work, deducted by the contractor, and a one-time initiation fee when you come in. The figures differ by local and change when bylaws or agreements change, so confirm them with the hall before you plan around them.
That depends on where you live and how you file, and the rules have changed in recent years for federal filing in the United States while some states still allow a deduction. Ask a tax professional about your own return — we are recruiters, not tax advisers.
Health and welfare, pension, annuity and how hours earn them
Benefits are paid by the contractor per hour worked into jointly trusteed funds: health and welfare, a pension, and in most jurisdictions an annuity or supplemental account. Many locals also participate in the sheet metal industry's national funds and stabilisation plans alongside the local trust. As with the rest of the trades, coverage runs on hours banked rather than on a salary, so eligibility depends on steady work.
What the collective bargaining agreement covers and how often it changes
The local's agreement with signatory sheet metal contractors sets the journeyman and apprentice wage rates, the hourly fringe contributions, overtime and shift rules, travel and subsistence, foreman rates, jurisdiction over duct, architectural metal, service and testing-and-balancing work, and the referral procedure. Agreements typically run three to five years with scheduled increases.
The local issues it. Where we hold a dated published sheet for a local we show it on that local's page and say when it was issued; where we do not, we say so rather than guessing. The hall's office always has the current one.
How work is referred out of the hall
Signatory shops call the hall, and members are referred from the out-of-work list in the order and classification the agreement provides. Shop, field, service and TAB classifications are often handled separately. Gulfstream does not dispatch — the detailing, service and field-leadership roles we recruit for are direct-hire positions.
Working outside your home local and where your fringes go
Yes. You sign in with the local whose jurisdiction the work sits in and work under its agreement and rate while staying a member at home. Reciprocity can send your fringe contributions back to your home funds, but you must file for it with the fund offices.
Getting in, how long it takes and what it costs
Local training centres run the apprenticeship jointly with signatory contractors: several years of paid work in the shop and the field, paired with classroom and hands-on instruction in layout, fabrication, installation, service and increasingly detailing software. Application windows and entry testing are set by the local's training centre — apply there directly.
Pension credit, vesting and drawing a pension
Credit accrues on the hours contractors report for you, and a benefit becomes payable once you vest under the plan's rules. Members with hours in more than one fund should keep reciprocity current. Your fund office's statement is the authoritative record.
Routes in for experienced hands already in the trade
Yes — locals organise in experienced fabricators, installers, service techs and detailers, normally with a skills assessment to set your classification. Speak to the organiser at the local covering your area. Detailing, BIM and VDC coordination roles are among the positions Gulfstream fills most often, and those hire on portfolio and experience whether or not you carry a card.
No. Gulfstream recruits for both union-signatory and open-shop mechanical, electrical and sheet metal contractors. The roles listed here are direct-hire positions where your experience decides the outcome. We are not a hiring hall and we do not dispatch.
