Sheet metal fabrication and installation, HVAC ductwork, and architectural metal.
Requirements and wages are set by each local, not the international union. Official source: smart-union.org.
Sheet metal apprenticeships are run by each local's Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee. You apply to the JATC or training center attached to the local whose jurisdiction you live in, and application periods are set locally — some accept applications year-round, others on scheduled dates.
If you already work in the trade, contact the local about membership as an experienced worker. The local will want to verify your hours and skills before placing you.
Requirements are set by each local's JATC. The typical minimums are below; many programs add an aptitude test, interview, or both before ranking applicants.
Each SMART local negotiates its own agreement with signatory sheet metal contractors, so wages are local, not national. The rate sheet lists the hourly base wage plus employer-paid fringe — health, pension, and training contributions — and the total package is the hourly cost of your labor to a signatory shop.
Apprentices are paid a percentage of the journeyman rate that steps up over the program. Note that some SMART locals cover railroad, production, or transportation members rather than building-trades sheet metal work — on this site, those locals don't show a construction rate sheet, by design.
Every pay page on this site cites its source and effective date. A published scale is the area standard, not a specific job's offer.
