Most inside-wireman apprenticeships are run jointly by the IBEW local and the local NECA chapter through a Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee, with curriculum from the electrical training ALLIANCE. You apply to the JATC serving your area, not to the international, and each JATC sets its own application dates.
Experienced electricians can approach a local directly about membership. The local will ask you to document your hours and may test or interview you to place you at the right classification.
Each JATC publishes its own minimums. The common baseline for an inside apprenticeship is below; some programs also require a qualifying score on an aptitude test covering algebra and reading comprehension, followed by an interview.
IBEW wages are set by each local's agreement with its signatory contractors, so rates differ, sometimes significantly, from one local's jurisdiction to the next. The rate sheet shows the hourly base wage plus fringe benefits paid by the employer on top: health and welfare, pension, and often an annuity or training contribution.
Apprentices earn a percentage of the journeyman rate that rises at each step of the program, and many agreements also define intermediate classifications (such as residential wireman or CW/CE) with their own rates.
