Commercial mechanical construction runs on design talent — the people who draw, detail, coordinate and engineer the systems before a crew ever installs them. Explore the roles and the firms that employ them.
MEP roles at general contractors
Compare MEP coordinators, estimators, project managers, superintendents and VDC teams. See how they manage whole-project interfaces with designers and trade contractors, from preconstruction through turnover.
On a design-build mechanical project these roles form a chain: the design engineer or pre-construction engineer establishes the system, the detailer models it for fabrication, the spooler breaks piping into shop pieces, the coordinator reconciles every trade's model, and the BIM/VDC manager runs the department that ties it together. Drafters support each stage. Titles and boundaries vary by company — smaller contractors combine roles, larger ones specialize.
Architecture & engineering (AE) firms: Mechanical is one department among many. Design direction flows from the architectural concept, and the ME's coordination partners — structure, electrical, interiors — are down the hall rather than at another firm.
MEP design (consulting engineering) firms: Engineering is the product being sold, not a support department. Mechanical design is the firm's identity, so systems depth, licensure and technical reputation drive advancement.
Owner's representative firms: The ME protects the owner's interests. Success is measured by the quality of questions asked and problems caught early, not by drawings produced.
Construction managers (CM): The CM manages the process and the contracts rather than designing the systems or installing them. The ME's value is keeping mechanical scope, cost and schedule honest across designers and subcontractors.
Construction contractors: Design is accountable to construction outcomes — cost, schedule, fabrication and field installability. No other firm type closes the loop between an engineering decision and a crew installing the result.
