VDC and BIM detailing is one of the highest-leverage roles in mechanical construction in 2026. Here's what detailers, coordinators, and managers actually earn.
National 2026 base ranges by experience level:
Most VDC roles are eligible for 5-15% bonus, with department heads carrying 15-25%.
Senior detailer / coordinator (6-10 years) base ranges:
VDC managers run 25-40% above senior coordinator pay in each market.
Three drivers: (1) the skill stack — proficient Revit MEP, Navisworks, Revizto, AutoCAD MEP, plus understanding of how systems get built — is genuinely rare; (2) prefab and modular construction trends make the VDC team central to project profitability; (3) the talent pool is smaller than for traditional field roles, so contractors compete for the same names.
Often yes. Modelers and junior detailers are increasingly hired remote or hybrid by contractors comfortable with the workflow. Senior coordinators and VDC managers typically need to be on-site for clash coordination meetings and field walks — usually hybrid (3 days on-site, 2 remote) rather than fully remote. Fully-remote senior VDC roles exist but pay roughly 5-10% below comparable on-site roles because the available pool is national rather than local.
Revit MEP fluency is table stakes. The pay bumps come from: Navisworks (clash coordination), Revizto (live coordination workflow), AutoCAD MEP (legacy projects), Trimble FabShop / Fabrication CADmep (sheet metal and piping prefab), and increasingly Procore BIM module integration. Detailers with the full stack plus prefab experience earn 10-15% above peers with just Revit.
VDC detailing is typically salaried exempt, so true overtime is rare. Bonus structures vary widely: department-level bonuses on coordination efficiency (clashes resolved per week, RFI turnaround), project bonuses on prefab yield, or company-wide discretionary. Strong VDC managers should expect 15-25% of base in bonus during a normal year.
Demand stays strong. Prefab and modular construction trends push more contractors to build VDC departments, but the talent pool grows slowly. Expect 7-10% base comp growth for senior VDC roles in 2027, with VDC managers at the top of that range.
