Sheet Metal Foreman Pay Bands by Region (2026)

Sheet metal foremen run the most labor-intensive trade on a mechanical project. Here's what they earn in 2026 — by region, union and non-union.

What does a commercial sheet metal foreman earn in 2026?

Pay depends heavily on union vs. non-union, region, and crew size managed. National 2026 ranges:

  • Sheet metal foreman (small-to-mid crew, 6-15 workers): $42-$62/hr base or $95,000-$135,000 annualized
  • General foreman (multi-crew, 20+ workers): $52-$78/hr base or $115,000-$165,000 annualized
  • Project foreman / superintendent crossover: $130,000-$180,000 salaried

Add overtime (most union foremen earn 200-600+ OT hours/year), per diem on travel work, vehicle, and benefits.

What are the regional differences?

Senior sheet metal foreman base hourly ranges (non-union) or wage equivalent (union, package value):

  • San Francisco Bay Area: $68-$92/hr equivalent total package
  • Los Angeles / Orange County: $58-$82/hr
  • New York metro: $62-$88/hr
  • Seattle: $58-$80/hr
  • Boston: $55-$76/hr
  • Chicago: $52-$72/hr
  • Denver: $48-$68/hr
  • Phoenix: $46-$64/hr
  • Dallas / Houston: $44-$62/hr
  • Atlanta: $40-$58/hr
  • Charlotte / Nashville: $38-$55/hr
  • Salt Lake City: $44-$62/hr

Union markets (most of the West Coast, Northeast, Chicago, Twin Cities) command meaningfully higher package value once pension and health are included.

How does the union package change the math?

A union sheet metal foreman package typically includes: base wage, employer-paid health and welfare ($14-$22/hr), pension ($10-$18/hr), annuity, apprenticeship contribution, and vacation fund. Total package value runs 35-55% above base wage. A $58/hr base in a strong union market can equate to $85-$92/hr in total compensation when fully loaded.

What drives a foreman from $95K to $165K?

Five things: (1) crew size and complexity managed; (2) prefab and CNC literacy — foremen who can drive shop work earn more; (3) reading and coordinating with VDC / BIM teams; (4) experience on data center, healthcare, or life science work (specialty premium); (5) ability to run multiple crews or transition to general foreman / superintendent track.

What about overtime?

Sheet metal foremen typically work substantial OT — 10-20% of base salary in OT is normal, 30%+ on aggressive schedules. Union OT rates are 1.5x base; double-time on Sundays and holidays. Non-union OT varies by employer. Foremen on hyperscale data center or industrial work routinely clear $190,000-$240,000 with OT included.

What about per diem on out-of-town work?

Standard per diem in 2026 runs $125-$185/day plus lodging on out-of-town projects, sometimes higher for remote data center and industrial sites. A foreman on a 40-week out-of-town assignment can add $35,000-$50,000 in per diem on top of base wages.

What's the outlook for 2027?

Continued demand, especially for foremen with prefab leadership and VDC coordination skills. Sheet metal labor is one of the tightest trades nationally — expect 5-8% base wage growth in 2027 with stronger growth in markets supporting data center and industrial buildout (Phoenix, Northern Virginia, Hillsboro, Columbus, Atlanta).
