How to join SMART Local 1
Each Sheet Metal Workers local sets its own intake process, and it varies — we don't guess at SMART Local 1's rules. The common paths into a Sheet Metal Workers local:
Apprenticeship — Apply through the local's joint apprenticeship training committee (JATC). Most Sheet Metal Workers programs open applications on a set schedule and require an aptitude test and interview.
Organize in as an experienced worker — Journeymen and technicians already working in the trade can usually apply directly to the hall for membership.
Transfer from another local — Members of the same international can request a transfer card through their current hall.
For SMART Local 1's current application window, fees and requirements, contact the hall directly at (309) 682-5677.
How to apply for a job
Through the hall — Many locals dispatch work through a referral or out-of-work list. Whether SMART Local 1 uses one, how to sign it and how often to re-sign are set by the local — confirm with the hall.
Through Gulfstream — Gulfstream recruits for signatory and open-shop mechanical, electrical and controls contractors. You do not need to be a member to apply to our openings.
Membership and apprenticeship applications are handled by SMART Local 1 directly, not by Gulfstream. Call the hall at (309) 682-5677 to ask about current intake. The hall states: Must be 18 (or 17 with a high school diploma). Source: Hall-published source
