Service manager pay is harder to pin down than project manager pay because the title covers two very different jobs. A service manager running a six-tech residential replacement crew and a service manager running a 40-tech commercial agreements division share a title and little else. The ranges below describe commercial service management — dispatching technicians, owning maintenance agreements, and carrying a P&L.
| Level | Typical base range | Who this describes |
|---|---|---|
| Entry | $69,000 – $84,500 | First management seat after lead tech or field supervisor |
| Mid-career | $84,500 – $111,500 | Running a service team and agreement book |
| Senior | $111,500 – $149,500 | Division-level responsibility, large agreement base, multiple supervisors |
For field-wage context, union HVAC service technician rates are published in our union wage index — for example, UA Local 322 lists HVAC service techs at $46.23 per hour base. Service managers are salaried above the technicians they supervise, so the tech rate is a useful floor when you evaluate an offer.
Roughly $69,000 to $84,500 in base salary nationally, based on BLS-anchored ranges. Most first-time service managers are promoted from lead technician or field supervisor roles.
Often. Service manager compensation frequently includes a bonus tied to department revenue, margin or agreement sales, on top of base salary. Ask how the bonus is calculated before comparing offers.
At the senior level they converge. Project managers tend to start higher; service managers with a large agreement book and sales responsibility can out-earn them. The deciding factor is the size of the P&L you own.
The common path is technician to lead tech or field supervisor to service manager. Contractors also hire dispatchers and service coordinators into the role when they bring strong customer and organizational skills.
